Varren began as a kingdom and remains a kingdom at its core, but it conquered several neighboring countries and now functions as an empire. Emperor Sartaris Orivorn stands above the kings of the conquered realms.
Varren possesses old records and traditions concerning the Moonless Sky, the ancient world and forgotten gods. Valdaris Orivorn has not come to Roo primarily to conquer it. His central purpose is to explore and understand what Roo may have preserved.
Highward, the capital of Varren, is built directly atop an enormous Vanir ruin. From inside the city, later human streets and buildings obscure the ancient structure. From a distance, its impossible scale becomes visible.
Deep beneath Highward lies an ancient Vanir machine that Varren has never been able to fully activate. Valdaris and Darius are interested in the legendary Drianor bloodline because they believe it may be able to awaken such machinery.
