Necken is an ancient magic user connected to a sect that opposed Drianor thousands of years ago. He has survived far beyond a human lifespan through Lie magic, sustaining the falsehood that he should still be alive.
The lie of life
Lie magic allows something untrue or normally impossible to function as reality. Necken has used it on himself for millennia. His continued existence is therefore not immortality in the ordinary sense; it is a magical claim held in place by strength and conviction.
That claim is deteriorating. A powerful lie can weaken when even its caster can no longer believe in it completely, and Necken's extraordinary extension of life is beginning to fail.
Bound for centuries
Necken has been trapped or bound for many centuries, possibly around a thousand years. The witch who later encounters Fander did not originally bind him, but she knows why he is bound and has repeatedly tried to break the Lie magic sustaining him.
She has failed because her conviction has not been strong enough to overpower his lie.
Hinhåle
Necken seeks Hinhåle, an Aesir-created demon that carries Aesir or Unknown magic. An old magical belief holds that if Hinhåle is awakened, defeated, and his skull used as a vessel to drink from, the victor can gain access to that power.
Necken wants that power. What he ultimately intends to do with it is not yet established canon.
What is known — and what is not
Necken is perhaps around three thousand years old and was connected to those who opposed Drianor. His exact early history, the complete nature of his sect, and his final purpose remain unresolved. In Roo, even an ancient witness does not automatically provide a complete or trustworthy version of the past.
